About Julia Rockwell

Julia Rockwell is a self-taught artist whose work centers around abstract forms and coastal landscapes. Julia draws deep inspiration from the natural world—particularly the ever-shifting colors, textures, and moods of the sea. In addition to watercolor, she explores natural dyeing and fabric collage as part of her evolving creative practice.

Having grown up along the California coast, Julia uses art to explore a sense of place and the emotional landscape it evokes. The coastal terrain—its everchanging skies, shifting tides, and weathered coastline—serves as both inspiration and reflection. Her paintings are informed by a lifetime of watching the fog roll over the hills, tracing the horizon line, and feeling the rhythms of nature’s quiet drama.

In addition to painting, Julia has spent nearly two decades bringing creative vision to life through events, prop styling, and interiors. Whether she’s designing a space, curating an experience, or working with her hands in the studio, she embraces a multidisciplinary way of making that celebrates form, atmosphere, and feeling.

A passionate advocate for sustainability, Julia is also the author of Mothering Earth: The Busy Family’s Guide to Saving the Planet and is the former founder of The Mothering Earth Project. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children.
